Bosa Murali - a young man on a mission

A confident your man 21-year-old Bosa Murali is determined to make his dreams come true. The odds he is up against do not dishearten him. He was born with rod cone dystrophy, a congenital eye disease characterized by extremely poor vision - almost like being blind. Such patients are extremely sensitive to light and are often comfortable only in the dark. Born of a consanguineous marriage, he was the only one to be born with a handicap; his two younger brothers and a sister have normal vision.

Murali plans to become a teacher , for which he needs to do two-year Teachers Training course or a BA. Hopeful of getting a second class, he is also considering doing a telephone operators' or computer course and may take the help of Government schemes.

Bosa Murali's parents are agricultural laborers, toiling in Jangaguda village in Shameerpet Mandal, not far from Hyderabad, but the young man has shown the will to stretch limits all his life. Studying at the School for the Blind, at Darushafa in Hyderabad, he secured a second class in the tenth standard, and is now doing his intermediate. He lives in the school hostel, taking a bus each morning to travel almost 10 Km to the Government junior college.

He made effective use of Braille and audio-cassettes to help him in his studies. He uses a blind man's cane to move around on his own. But he wanted more out of life. Friends at the Blind School advised him to visit the Vision Rehabilitation Centre at LVPEI, where he benefited from the practical advice of doctors and professionals. Earlier he had to hold books very close to his face to read, now special spectacles allow him to read more comfortably and much faster. It is less tiring too.

He can read the chalkboard after learning to use a small telescope. Dark glasses shield him against the daylight glare. He is very grateful to the centre, as on his own he could not afford to pay for these facilities. The Meera & L B Deshpande Centre for Sight Enhancement gave him the spectacles, Telescope, Sun glasses and reading stand free of cost.
