Profile of IGNOU learner

Jyoti Mediratta

Twenty-four year old Jyoti Mediratta is the NCPEDP (National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People) Best Scholar-2001. A perfectly healthy child till she was three, Jyoti's ability to walk was severely impaired after an electric shock. A series of Surgical operations and continuous medical treatment could not help her much. School became a dream for Jyoti. Her father, a mathematics teacher decided to teach her at home. Extraordinarily intelligent, Jyoti persuaded her father to teach her more complicated concepts in mathematics. Equally gifted in languages, she picked up English and Hindi with equal ease and was soon proficient in both.

Jyoti attended the National Open School and passed Class X and Class XII with distinction. The quality of IGNOU study materials and the flexibilities in the distance education system attracted her towards it for graduation. Jyoti says, 'I studied four to five hours every day. Even on holidays'. No wonder, she passed her degree examination with first division. She then joined IGNOU's CIC programme followed by MCA. The financial problems at home could not discourage Jyoti from studies. She doesn't need sympathy and is determined to win over her financial and physical inability. A good painter too, she has an active social life and keeps in touch with her friends through e-mail.

Jyoti says, "Always remain positive in the face of hardships and all will be well. If you have a clear goal in front of you, It is possible to achieve it". IGNOU congratulates her for her exemplary achievements.
