Disability Access Audit Conducted in Jaipur Too

Dr. Meenu Bhambhani

The Disability Access Audits of public places in Jaipur, was unique in the sense that it not only transformed the Commissioner, Disabilities into playing the role of an activist but also helped disability activists and developing agencies to come together to sensitise the public on the need for accessibility for people with disabilities.

The campaign was launched by the Commissioner, Disabilities in association with Action Aid-Jaipur, Disha and disability activists. The first audit commenced on 23rd October 2001, with a visit to a bank. There was lot of resistance initially with the bank authorities not allowing us to take photographs! A total of eight audits were conducted, at Jaipur railway station, bus stops, the Collectorate, District Court, a leading girl’s college, S.M.S. Hospital and the Head Post Office.

The immediate impact of the audit has been in terms of construction of ramps and the availability of easy and accessible drinking water facility in Maharani College and at the Collectorate. The reports of each audit will be sent, along with the recommendations, and follow-up action will be taken up. It is hoped that the audit motivates the authorities and leads to a more sensitive and disabled friendly Jaipur.
