Prevention and Rehabilitation Projects
Sense International India Services for the Deaf
The BPA has initiated audiometry services for assessing hearing
of the Persons with hearing problems. Sense International
India donated an audiometer and also funds for the soundproof
room. Nearly 500 persons were helped to get an audiogram
done by a qualified Audiologist. Hearing aids are provided
free of charge under the Aids and Appliances scheme of the
Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. Speech therapy
is also provided on a regular basis. Audiometry is done on
every Monday.
Ratanlal Lallubhai Center for Multihandicapped
This Center is providing intensive service to 35 children
with multiple disabilities. The group covered for rehabilitation
consists of children who are blind and deaf. Mentally
retarded and blind- that is all of them have two or
more disabilities. The Hilton/Perkins International
Program has supported this Unit for three years.
CBR for Children for Multiple Disabilities
A pilot CBR programme for children with multiple disabilities
has been initiated in Limbdi and Kapadwanj Talukas
with the financial and technical assistance of Hilton/Perkins
International Program, U.S.A. A total of 15 children
with multiple disabilities have been taken up for rehabilitation.
Satellite Centers for Multiply Disabled
Mr. Kirk Horton, Regional Representative, Hilton Perkins
International Programme paid a visit to all the satellite
centers for the multiple disabled set up by the BPA
with financial assistance from the Hilton Perkins.
He visited the centers in Kapadwanj, Aadipur, Jamnagar,
Dahod and Viramgam and saw how these units have helped
in enabling services to reach children with multiple
disabilities in small towns and rural areas. His five-day
visit was full of traveling and non-stop work from
27th November to 2nd December, 2000.
A 4 week training program for Satellite Centers' special
educators for children with multiple disabilities, was
organized from 5 June to 5 July 2000.
C.N. Kinariwala Unit for the Disabled
In the span of one year, this unit has identified 43
deafblind persons. 5 children are being provided direct
services at the center while the others are provided
home-based services. The highlight of the year was
the placement of a young person-Krupa Velani, in the
one year Course in deafblindness, recognized by the
RCI and coordinated by the Helen Keller Institute for
the Deaf and Deafblind, Mumbai. This training was being
supported by Sense International.
The Temple of Hope Scheme
This self-employment programme helped-persons to get
meaningful remuneration through milk booths, telephone
booths and petty shops. The Gujarat State Road Transport
Corporation has allotted 115 locations all over Gujarat
for installing a STD telephone booth on every S.T.
bus stand. The various Lions and Lioness Clubs and
have helped in funding these stalls. UTI Bank Ltd.
Donated funds for setting up 50 such booths.
