DISABLED-FRIENDLY BUSES AND RAILWAY STATION

Delhi government, in the month of July, gave contract to Telco for manufacturing state-of-the-art buses, which would be disabled-friendly.  There would be provision for a space to keep wheelchairs.  The two hydraulic doors will be 1.2 meters wide, giving ample space to comfortably load wheelchairs.  In addition, the buses will have low flooring, roof housed CNG cylinders, air conditioners. 

Initially, Telco will supply ten buses t the transport department, which would run on a High Capacity System  “If the experiment succeeds, more buses will be procured,” an official said.  RITES would construct dedicated bus lanes, the estimated cost of constructing each kilometer of bus lane is Rs. 5 crore including bus stop.

In another development, Northen Railway is to construct city’s   first disabled-friendly railway station at Anand Vihar, New Delhi, that will be connected to the Anand Vihar inter-state bus terminus (ISBT) so that commuters do not have to take additional transport to reach the station. 

The project of Rs. 83 crore was cleared in the budget and will begin by the end of this financial year, informed R R Jaruhar, General Manager, Northern Railway.
